The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) hosted the ICANN Regional Meeting from 1-3 April 2008 at the Dubai Grand Hyatt Hotel. The meeting was the second ICANN outreach regional events after the one held in Taipei in October 2007.
The meeting gathered policy makers, managers of country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD), and Internet businesses, and a wide range of stakeholders.
Mr. Mohamed Nasir Al Ghanim, TRA Director General, opened the event recognising ICANN’ efforts to engage with Internet community in the Middle East. Mr Paul Twomey President and CEO of ICANN highlighted in his opening keynote the need to strengthen the multi-stakeholder model.
During the first day participants discussed issues related to Internationalized Domain Names ( IDN ) with an excellent presentation from SaudiNIC (.sa) highlighting Arabic language versus Arabic script in domain names. Discussion about IDN continued in the second day technical experts involved in the Arabic Script IDN Working Group. Experts highlighted the need to have more support and implication from ICANN to ensure solutions will preserve security and interoperability of the Internet.
In Day 3, the focus was on the domain name industry with a presentation from 4 ICANN Accredited Registrars showcasing different business model tailored to geographical, cultural or business need. Participants reacted to the actual situation of the domain name industry in the region and the need to raise more awareness about the business opportunities.
