I had the pleasure to participate in a debate organized by the Internet Society France and AfNIC nad hosted by Webforce3 in their HQ in Paris.

The discussion with the key French experts from the community about the IANA Transition, and answered questions such as: what news following the implementation of this transition? How to actively participate in the governance of the Internet in this new framework?

The discussion was moderated and led by both Mathieu Weill, Director General of Afnic and Nicolas Chagny, President of the Internet Society France.

IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) now manages the root servers of domain names, as well as the basic management of IP addresses. Previously administered by ICANN, the IANA Functions are the bedrock of Internet operations around the world. They were governed by a contract between the US Department of Commerce and ICANN. At the request of the United States, since 2013 ICANN has initiated a process of governance change for the management of these IANA functions (“IANA Transition”) with the objective of the Internet Community taking over the role of overseeing these functions.
